Buyers beware of good modems

First of all, the device itself is fine and the delivery from the seller was fast. But there is much more behind the scenes. My comments apply to Comcast/Xfinity and Arris - other providers may vary. I bought it on recommendation from Comcast - the customer service rep said they get the fewest support calls on this device. When it arrived I was shocked to see that there were NO instructions on it - clearly a single unit that came from a supplier's wholesale order and was not intended for retail sale to the consumer. So I went to Arris online and found the manual. Once connected, I called Comcast knowing they had to "activate" the device and link it to my account. 1 hour later the internet was working but the phone and wifi were not working. Long story short I spoke to 6 different agents in 4 different departments and after almost 3 hours finally connected my phone and internet. Used live chat on Arris website for WiFi help as Comcast refused to do anything as it wasn't rented. Arris tells me that "the service provider is contractually obligated to provide all support" and "I don't even know what this device looks like". While waiting for the supervisor, I finally managed to log into the router, change my network name and password, and get my wireless devices to discover it. So the bottom line is that Comcast says call Arris, Arris says call Comcast. Nobody will help you - if you can't figure it out yourself, you'd better have a tech-savvy friend who can help you.
