We all know a relative who wants to encourage the artist in the family on the one hand and is inexpensive on the other. or you have a price limit for gift exchange. Except for a professional artist or someone special, this set will come in handy for them. If you've always wanted to try different products, this set is a comforting introduction. If you like, take some good mixed media paper or a sketchbook with you. In the drawing I used Stilman and Birn Nova's gray tone. With +/- 40 types of dry and watercolor pencils in my hands, I place them in the student category of basic artist. You'll know if you're ready to upgrade to higher quality materials, and it will be a good box to keep it, but if you relearn and burn consumables, this is a good brand. For more experienced artists, here are the key details - watercolor pencils are clear, have decent pigment, and melt well. They behave like the more expensive artist kit I have. If you don't want anything like thickly pigmented Derwents or really care about lightfastness, King is the way to go. I didn't have a wobbly, binder-heavy enamel like other "cheap" watercolor pencils. The included brush is smaller, you will probably need a more comfortable and/or water pen. With dry pencils, I want the dark tones to be richer and the brown tones to be very reddish. There are many similar shades for a set of this size. Be sure to try them because the colors are not on the barrels. However, they are workable and you can get some nice lightweight coats. They are harder than Verithins and Derwent Studio and I didn't have to sharpen while I was working. On the gray book image by Stilman and Birn Nova, the watercolor pencil is on the left and the drypen is on the right. This is by far the best mixed media paper I have.
