Review on 🌑️ Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor: Remote Monitoring, Home Automation & Wireless Thermometer Hygrometer by Jerry Delic

Does the job, can work with a SmartThings hub

Okay, let me get that out of the way first. I'm glad Revain wanted me to review this product separately for its 'flexibility'. What does that even mean? This is an overview of the temperature/humidity sensor. Pros: - Small form factor fits in well enough - Gets the job done - Prices are reasonable - Can be paired with a SmartThings hub if you want to put up with a bit of hop/hate to set it up with a member-made custom Handler community and freely available on Github. The range seems good. I have a SmartThings hub in the basement and the farthest of my 4 humidity/temp sensors is in the hallway on my 2nd floor; Values are posted regularly, so my historical chart rarely, if ever, has any breaks. Cons: Difficult to pair with SmartThings. It's possible as mentioned in the pros, but this device violates the Zigbee standard to force users to buy an Aqara hub. After pairing with a SmartThings hub, it may take some time for some values to update, e.g. B. the battery. If you leave it for a while they will eventually start posting (at least they did for me!) - I'm not sure if they're entirely accurate, but they seem to be relatively accurate. However, I haven't compared them to a calibrated standard, so I can't say for sure. Final Notes: I think it's stupid of Aqara to break the Zigbee standard just to force users to buy an Aqara hub. If you want people to use your hub, give them a good reason to do so (e.g. to somehow improve the hub itself). Don't hack (break) any published communication standard just to bind sensors to your hub. The hub and sensors must be self-contained as they provide value to the user to ensure their respective purchase.

Pros
  • Rugged build
Cons
  • Legacy model
