Don't let negative reviews put you off this great product. This is an attractive item at a great price. To answer a few questions; the bench, if properly assembled, will easily withstand 300# (my wife and I are together). Also, don't be alarmed if the board "creaks", it's just the top boards rubbing against each other. It is in order. The supplied tool with a spirit level or angle is sufficient for assembly. I can give assembly tips as the included instructions are a bit simplified (perhaps that's why the reviews were mentioned). 1) Loosely assemble all components, starting with the legs attached to the seat. 2) Note that the two legs are different and belong to the boot end of the bench. The screws holding the shelves are the IKEA type with barrel nuts inserted into the holes. The nuts have a line showing their correct position in the hole. 3) After fastening everything by hand, turn the block upside down. Have a helper hold the scale on the middle leg and make sure it is upright. Alternatively, you can use a cheap plastic square or triangle to ensure the leg is perpendicular to the seat. While your assistant holds everything in this position, start tightening the screws, starting at the end of the legs and moving towards the seat. 4) Finally, attach the assembled "leg and shelf unit” to the seat. DO NOT over-tighten the barrel bolts. Using the included hex wrench with normal hand strength should do the trick. I enjoy my wonderful bank, I hope you do too. I almost didn't buy it because of what I read and that would be a mistake.
