Review on πŸ“Έ Cutting-Edge Digital Photo Laser Tachometer: Accurate Non-Contact Tach RPM Meter by Jerry Frey

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Ideal for CNC tapping with Tapmatic head

I have had very good experiences with this tachometer. It seems very accurate, of course with any HAND tach you have to be careful to keep your hand VERY steady, especially at higher speeds. If your hand moves even slightly, the readings will be severely distorted. I use this to get accurate RPM readings on my milling machine so I can sync the cutting head to the spindle. Since the machine uses a variable speed belt it's not possible to get the machine to produce exact spindle revolutions, but thanks to this tachometer I don't need exact revolutions, I just need to know what it is and then key in that number . to my cnc controller to do the math and find the feed rate that matches each spindle speed. I've found that if I put my hand on the vise while taking readings, they are very accurate. If I try to just stand there and hold his spindle, well, it's everywhere. It's not the device's fault, it's the simple fact that if my hand moves a little between spins, the time it takes to get the reflection is different. I suspect those with accuracy issues don't realize the importance of staying calm. In my opinion, at higher RPMs, it would be impossible to keep ANY device steady enough to get a stable reading. but if you steady yourself on something attached to what you are measuring you can get accurate readings. I've been cutting holes with this machine using this tachometer as a spindle speed reference for about a year and the timing is perfect.

Pros
  • βœ”Very large 5-digit LCD display, high accuracy +/- 0.05%
Cons
  • Slightly torn
