Review on TraderPlus SCART Wire Cable Playstation Console by Adolfo Goins

Revainrating 2 out of 5

This works on my original PS1 but the RGB needs to be modified

Update 09 May 2021 I recently modified my PS1 for composite only syncing and found that this cable no longer works. The video signal was synchronized and visible, but only as faint grayscale. Opening the cable, I saw that although the RGB lines are connected, none of their grounds are connected. There is also no 180 ohm resistor in the scart head between pins 8 and 16 for proper attenuation. The video and the two audio grounds are connected together at the console port. This effectively makes the composite video cable just SCART. After removing the hot glue from the back of the scart connector I connected any missing RGB grounds to the sync ground and added a suitable 180 ohm resistor between pins 8 and 16. This fixed the video. I then moved the video/sync signal ground to pin 8 of the console connector but didn't see any noticeable improvement in video quality so this step isn't really necessary. Opening this port from the console side requires patience. I stuffed something into the back of the connector where the circular strain relief is and wobbled/lifted it like that. I recommend checking with a multimeter beforehand whether this is even necessary with the scart head open. This extra step was not necessary for me (5V at the end of the scart just wrongly connected and ground separation showed little improvement) and I only noticed after I had already taken it apart. For those who don't have a soldering iron, tweezers, resistors and some patience, I don't recommend this cable at all. It's not RGB, although it's almost programmed. If you don't mind crafting and have all the necessary things, this can be a fun little project. As it comes in two packages, one can even be "fixed" and the other left untouched to compare composite video and RGB. I downgraded my rating to two stars. Since it's not an RGB cable until you "fix" it, and technically you can use it to just unplug the connectors and make your own. I use it with my original playstation console through the ossc device and it works as intended. The cable is very light, the wires are not the thickest and not shielded, but it works.

Pros
  • Legacy systems
Cons
  • So far so good
