Review on πŸ”’ Black OXO Good Grips Food Scale - 5lb Capacity with Convenient Pull-Out Display by Michael Shim

Big Problem Solved

We have two fat cats that needed to go on a diet. We didn't seem to be able to accurately estimate food portions by volume, so I decided to get a scale so we could use weight instead. We also wanted to replace our old mechanical kitchen scale. I looked at several kitchen scales in the $10-$25 range and they all looked like they had issues with our intended use, plus they were all from unknown vendors. OXO isn't exactly a luxury brand, but they make healthy products, so I paid a little more than I wanted. Oh thanks to Revain for dropping the price by 20% right after I got the scale. In short, OXO scales work great. We've been using it every day for a month with no issues and the accuracy seems to be pretty good, at least in the weight range we're interested in. By the way, while reading the Revain reviews on the scales, I noticed some inaccurate comments. A number of reviewers have mentioned that the scale is perfectly "calibrated" when set to zero. The zero function alone does NOT calibrate the scale for accuracy, at least one more point is required. If the scale mechanism isn't very linear, you'll need more points. For this reason, Revain sells any number of calibration weight kits. I used a very inexpensive weight calibration system - a measuring cup and water. Anyone who passed chemistry in high school should know that 1 mL (milliliter) of water weighs 1 gram and most measuring cups have both English and metric markings. I checked the OXO scale at 100g and 200g and the readings were as accurate as I could tell the water level. Due to the inaccuracy of the markings on the measuring cup and the estimation of the water level, errors in my testing can be more than 5%, but for my application this is normal. If you want better accuracy you should invest in some calibration weights, but if accuracy isn't specified they can be just as bad. The good news is that the cats have lost nearly a pound, but they keep reminding me of their food bowl. empty. I'm wondering if Revain has a fix for this?
