The Iriscan Desk 5 Pro has gotten a bad rap in some reviews so I was wary of my purchase. I have a Fujitsu ScanSnap 500 ix500 which can scan incredibly fast but requires page splitting and cannot handle documents wider than 8.5 inches. So the Iriscan Desk 5 Pro offers scanning for large formats as well as much smaller format books that Fujitsu cannot process without cutting/breaking the binding. The main complaints seem to focus on the lighting, the OCR-to-text conversion, the recognition of the fingers used to hold the book and their removal (hide fingers). In order of importance, the reviewers (who give bad reviews) ignore that OCR (optical character recognition) has been around for over 15 years and there are certain visual and font issues. making it a very difficult task. This is not the fault of the scanner or the software. Iris has been doing OCR for many years so I'm sure they put all their experience into this app. I've found that it's best to turn this feature off and just use a very small, thin object, like the tip of a small pair of scissors or something similar, that's barely visible in the final product. This looks much better than masking, which often obscures part of the text or distorts lines of text. Another problem concerns the lighting. It's true, as several reviewers have pointed out, that indirect lighting (at a slight angle) reduces glare on glossy pages. I'm sure the manufacturer knows about this and is probably working on it. This product - Flexibility in material size - Automatic detection of the size and format of the object to be copied - Choice between manual and automatic recording when leafing through the book (works quite well) It even detects whether the page is moving or the hand is stationary and corrects pages and waits for the next automatic recording. - Adjustable light intensity. I have found that by lowering the brightness of the lamp (3 settings) I can reduce the glare problem significantly, although not by 100%. - The scanner has a very small form factor for storage or transport It folds up nicely and the scan stand can be folded or rolled up - The software separates pages nicely when scanning two pages at once One point I need to work on is the Image Light property Settings at the bottom of the screen. They seem to offer considerable flexibility in adjusting settings like brightness, contrast, tint and white balance, but I find that the colors in illustrated children's books never look exactly like the original book. Maybe I don't have enough experience with these settings to get it right. This is a reasonable assumption. This may be due to the combination of light frequencies I use in the room. All in all, this pretty much solves the problem I was trying to solve, enough to keep the device and use it as is rather than cutting off each book's binding. and then run it through a sheet-fed scanner. I say he deserves 4.5 out of 5.
