Review on ๐Ÿ”ฆ PDW Pathfinder - Vertical Cutoff Beam Headlight by Mike Goodwin

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Reliable headlight, annoying battery indicator

Pros: Lightweight headlight, USB chargeable. The vertical cutoff beam works exactly as advertised, focusing most of the light onto the pavement and projecting a glare-free amount of light directly onto oncoming motorists. There's also a daytime flash mode that only illuminates straight-line light (and no part of the pavement). Definitely one of the best bike lights in terms of value for money. As a bonus, it fits perfectly on a Planet Bike fork mount (Portland Design Works doesn't make fork mounts) if you don't want to carry it on the handlebars. Cons: One star for the upward-facing USB charging port. It would make more sense if the rubber seal that protects the port opens at the top so that the opening points downwards like with roof shingles. I'm concerned about rain pooling in the pad when it opens to the sky, although so far I haven't had any issues. Another star is deducted for the battery indicator. Portland Design Works had good intentions, but the execution is pretty dumb. The indicator flashes while charging, and stays on when fully charged. For ten minutes. Then it turns off, leaving you wondering if someone turned off the light or if it's finished charging. When you turn on the lights on your bike and start riding, the charge indicator lights up to show you how much charge is left. Again, it lights up for 10 minutes every time you turn on the light. It seems like a waste of energy; A few seconds of illumination would be enough, and the bright green light at the front of your bike looks odd when riding.

Pros
  • Top marks for grip and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other models
