Canon improves ergonomics but ruins the battery compartment?

Let's start with the essentials: Ergonomically this is the BEST grip for all large Canon bodies. Comparing it directly to the 5D3 and 7D2 grips I have, it has a very contoured shape for your hands and feels VERY similar to the built in 1DX2 grip. From this point of view, the new grip is my favorite from Canon. Most notably, the battery grip is weatherproof and has a seal not only around the battery cover, but also where the battery enters the camera body. The 5D3 Canon grip didn't have this, but the 7D2 Canon grip did. What's wrong with Canon? Well I'm sure this step was taken to reduce the weight. But the new tablet looks like junk and the way the batteries charge is odd. I see it breaking at some point and I mean really breaking. It feels very poorly made and the batteries don't feel secure in the compartment due to the new design. Too bad they messed it up like that.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • So-so

Very good grip solution for the Canon 5D Mark IV (except the battery tray)
