The title says it all. I've been switching between clips and flats for probably 3-4 years now. I like both for different reasons. Sneakers: I use these for wheels, guides and ride Mac-Ride with my son (another great product btw) so I can spread my legs a little more for my knees. It's easy to get off and sometimes good for technical terrain or wet conditions. Also good for occasional trips. Clips: I use them for aggressive descents and jumps, bike parks, trails, etc. So what drew me to these pedals - do they work? Well, right off the bat I found them quite difficult to put on with my Five Ten District Clip shoes. I couldn't use the SPD tip very often, I had to look down and try really hard. But there was a problem: the cleat didn't protrude enough to engage the Mambas clamping mechanism. So I added a Shimano 1mm spacer and that was it! Now I'm much better at crashing with muscle memory (without looking down). I also added a little more spring tension to the SPD than the Mambas as I like the distinct click and hold. tell you why If you're in flat mode and want the clips to be fairly quick (e.g. after you've started the trail but have nothing to steady you at first), you can use your right (or left) foot lift off the pedal. Make a half turn of the pedal (180 degrees) and the SPD clamping mechanism is facing up! This is REALLY GOOD for a pedal of this type, otherwise you would have to deal with flipping the pedal, looking down while walking over rocks on your climb, and trying not to fall in the process. Now that I know it's not spinning, I can confidently place my right foot on the clamp once my left foot is all the way down the crank travel. Most of the time this happens without looking back - one of the main advantages of reversible SPD pedals. Note that the pins are not as aggressive as the pins found on other flat pedals. It's a plus and a minus, but mostly a plus. Don't worry, if you're not careful, they'll still remove scraps of skin from your leg. With clips as the final secure attachment, I don't really need longer pins (aka set screws). Again, pegs are better for casual shoes, if that matters at all (not usually for MTB). Anyway - there's a lot of detail here - I want to say I'm loving these pedals right now. To me they are definitely the best of both worlds. And they have a choice of colors to boot. Silver is hot!
