Review on ๐Ÿ”ง Compound Mill Cross Slide Vise by Brad Ward

Revainrating 5 out of 5

NOT the best, but with a fix very close!

It was immediately clear to me that this was going to be a mess. What do you expect for 50-60โ‚ฌ? Which I didn't know but thought I could improve accuracy. Knowing it would be cheap (and surprisingly it wasn't!), it was assumed that accuracy would be poor. The only major issue is how the assembled vise actually moves. Both screws go through separate brass pins. Because they are separate, they move freely relative to each other, giving the bolts a lot of play. I was going to ask a friend to build me a new solid drum, but I decided to do it myself. I drilled both drums at the same time, one on top of the other so they lined up and then touched. I connected both drums with a screw, tightened them up and reinstalled the one-piece compound adjustment drum in the block. Now it's accurate to thousandths of an inch, no play, no play. I highly recommend this piece if you are able to make this modification. I didn't need 30 minutes. to complete the mod and some more time to rebuild as I don't look at the documentation for disassembly or rebuild.

Pros
  • โ˜… Handwheels are machine marked in 0.1mm increments for maximum precision. X-axis adjustment: 80 mm. Adjustment in Y direction: 67 mm.
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
