After reading some of the reviews I thought these comments might be helpful to some; I'll be brief. 1997 Ford Ranger 4.0L cranked but would not start. After checking that the fuel system/filter/pump/injectors were working, I found that the ignition circuit was not sparking on all cylinders. Looking at the schematics in the Haynes manual and online, I've narrowed down the problem to the coil pack (CP, the element), the crankshaft position sensor (CPS), and the engine control unit (ECU). I ordered CPS and CP because they were the cheapest items. After replacing the CSP, the Ranger started with the old (almost a quarter of a century, made in Spain) CP. Glad it wasn't the ECU. There is a difference between CP wiring with a horizontal or vertical control plug, so getting the right one is necessary when not making socket changes. One minor criticism I have is that the height of the pin sticking out on the CP isn't high enough to engage the latch on the fork. Based on what was posted here I decided to replace the old CP with this one to see what would happen, no engine codes were thrown. I'll leave it installed and edit my review if the CP gives problems, but these coil packs are relatively simple electrical devices. If not edited, the new CP still works.
