Review on Seagate Enterprise Capacity ST2000NM000A 7200RPM by Juston Alonso

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The Exos 7E8 2TB was the best drive I tried for OS

and when I checked the warranty on the Seagate website was for 5 years. I have two Hitachi 2TB hard drives that have been running for about 7 years without any problems (7200rpm). One drive has Win 7, Vista and XP installed and the other drive is for data (my main boot drive for Win 10 is on an SSD). But since I sometimes have to use Win 7 and these drives are a bit outdated, I wanted to replace them with new faster hard drives. I decided to try the Seagate Barracuda 2TB first as it was a low price. I was impressed that it is a cymbal with two bowls inside and is quiet. Also, when I first benchmarked it with Crystal, the read and write speeds were over 200MB/s. But if I ran it again, the numbers would be inconsistent and would only be 35 MB/s. Using HD Tune showed that the speed of this drive drops off sharply across the disk. I cloned my Win 7 to it, it took about 4 minutes to fully boot, no faster than the old Hitachi. The 2-year guarantee is also annoying. So I can't recommend this drive as an OS drive, but it's fine as a backup drive or just a data drive if you don't need high performance. I've since also tried these WD Gold 2TB (good performance but loud noise when spinning disk and loud read/write clicks), Seagate Exos 7E2 and newer Exos 7E8). The WD Gold was the noisiest drive of all as I could hear the drive spinning (motor) and loud clicks when reading/writing. The Exos 7E2 wasn't as loud as the WD Gold. The best drive was the $150 Exos 7E8. It was actually the quietest drive of all and also the fastest at up to 240-250MB and also comes with a 5 year warranty which I checked on the Seagate website. When I cloned my Win 7 to it, the boot time was 1 minute 45 seconds while the Barracuda took 4 minutes. So this shows that Exos 7E8 is faster for OS disks. Out of the 2TB drives I'm fed up with, Seagate Barracuda, WD Gold, Seagate Exos 7E2 and Exos 7E8, the Exos 7E8 was the best for the OS as it has the fastest speed and is also quieter than the others.
