I already had regular colored pencils and really liked them. I needed a set of good quality watercolor pencils at a reasonable price because I never wanted to use my expensive "practice" sets. I've had bad experiences with the cheap set, but I liked the regular paint set so much that I had to try watercolor. I was not disappointed. The colors are bright and blend well. They are comparable to Caran and Derwent but not as smooth. Too many coats will give you a glossy, waxy finish like regular crayons rather than the chalkier texture of more expensive brands, and for color saturation you just can't match Inktense. But these are really great pens and I find myself relying on them and ending up adding pops of color with inktense and gel pens. And they come with an incredible guarantee. Castle sent me a brand new set of regular pencils because the black core I had was broken, although I only discovered this a few months after receiving them. I took some photos of my experimental site. They're not the best, but hopefully you can see the range and vibrancy of the colors. Going from dark to light and getting the saturation just right was incredibly easy. For comparison I made a fish with Caran and Inktense and a butterfly with Inktense only. I also highlighted with a gel pen.
