High end products for the real (and affluent) connoisseurs and budget versions for people who just aren't B. interested, picky or financially strong. In some ways that are important when making coffee, it's significantly better than, say, a $30 Target coffee maker, but not as good as a $300 coffee maker. It's exactly what it's supposed to be: a decent step up from cheap devices, but not exactly "high". I give it 5 stars because it works really reliably for its price. However, I consider this a 4 star coffee maker if price is not an issue. but it's unfair to rate it on that basis. So let's talk about two things that play a big part in deciding how good a coffee maker is: the brewing temperature and the temperature of the coffee when you're sitting on the warmer. Brewing temperature: Coffee should be brewed between 195 and 205 degrees, according to all the people who actually study this stuff or work in the coffee industry. Few coffee machines, even much more expensive than the Savoy, achieve this. Super cheap coffee makers can be much lower, like 160 degrees. I tested this at 188. 188 is acceptable; You need a subtle taste to tell the difference between 188 and 195. However, the problem with low temperature brewing is that they cannot extract all of the flavor and essence of the beans and yes I think there is a small, I understand that this machine is not scooping 100% of the flavor available. Coffee Heater Temperature (plate below): In other words, what temperature will the coffee be after it has been on the heater for an hour. ? Ideally, it would be very hot. Essentially, anything above 165 degrees is perceived as HOT. If you're like me, anything under 150 is unsatisfactory, and anything under 145 or 140 will appear warm and go straight into the microwave. Sitting on a heating pad, the coffee in this machine stays at around 180 degrees, which is very hot. And it will stay at that temperature until it shuts off after two hours. So those are two things that really matter in a coffee maker. I give it a 4 for brewing temperature and a 5 for keeping warm. That makes it a teenage product in my opinion: much better than budget models, but not really high-end. Some other features and observations: - Automatic shutdown is 2 hours, which is the ideal amount of time. However, for the best flavor, it's best to remove it from the pot and pour it into a carafe, rather than leaving it on a hot plate and simmering for the next 2 hours. The tank is large and almost impossible to spray. Water everywhere at the store. The filter area is huge and the #4 filters fit snugly in with less fuss and mess than other coffee makers I've had. Instead of a paper coffee filter, a gold strainer can be used, which creates a little more mess but makes your cup of coffee taste better. I doubt I'll use it - depends on how patient I'm feeling that day. Coffee undoubtedly tastes better when you don't use paper filters, and a built-in metal filter is a nice feature. Please note that if you don't use a paper filter, some sediment will remain at the bottom of the coffee cup, but I actually enjoy seeing, smelling, and occasionally drinking the sediment. Reservoir level indicator on the cup Water tank is highly visible allowing you to see how things are going from every angle - Illuminated clock - Uses #4 cone filters which I find produces a better cup of coffee than flat ( Basket) Filter - It concentrates most of the grist into a smaller area, allowing for more flavor. In addition, less coffee grounds are required compared to basket filters, which is cheaper in the long run. A very simple, clear control panel that really suits my taste. No stupid programmable crap nobody uses anyway. - A good spout on the carafe - virtually spills nothing when coffee is poured into a mug. Pretty unusual in that regard. In summary I would say this is an excellent coffee maker for the price. If brewed at 200 degrees it would be an excellent machine at all costs, but I understand it requires more expensive internal guts that cannot be accommodated in a machine of this cost. Aside from that one detail, this block does a lot of things right. It's certainly a worthy upgrade over machines that cost just $10-$20 less and lack many of the features and benefits.
