I am really glad that I purchased these rug pads with the rubber backing (versus the one without made by the same company). These arrived exactly as described. It is one of the products that aren't necessary, but it does add a little more luxury and warmth to your space. I have two Ikea jute (natural fiber) rugs that I wanted to have more cushioning underneath and these worked perfectly. The non slip rubber is just a great addition to help them from slipping and protect our old hardwood floors. It also helps with footstep noise if you live in an apartment building. I did need to cut mine and it wasn't super easy but you can do it with kitchen shears. I recommend drawing a line to make a clean cut. These are as thick as a rug, and they do raise your rug and could be a tripping hazard if you don't cut them properly. If you cut the mat so that there is a 2 inch margin on each side, the rug will cascade nicely over the rug pad. Overall I highly recommend for creating a softer space for walking on. I think these are fantastic if you have small children. Makes sitting on the floor much more comfortable.
