Operation They work well. With salt, I sometimes have to shake a bit to grind it up, but I don't find that a big problem. Capacity and filling A star deduction for that. I wish the container was bigger and easier to fill. The transparent window you see in the photos is the entire cup where the salt and pepper go. It doesn't go to the black base. They are difficult to fill without a funnel (which makes the process much easier). Battery I bought it in December 2014. I had to replace batteries in a pepper mill in November 2016 and in a salt mill in January 2017. I use these three nights a week on average. Each requires 6 AA batteries.
