Attractive wooden legs, easy to assemble

This is a very beautiful and well finished piece of wood. I used them as footstools and the only problem I had was the hangar bolts were too long so I couldn't screw them in so there wasn't a gap between the top of the legs and the bottom of the footstool. I later bought a similar set of legs from another seller and the same thing happened. I'm wondering if these baseplates are designed to work properly with a standard 5/16" hangar screw?
