Review on Silhouette SILH Cameo Blade White by Cho Screeton

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Cameo users can benefit from this but with some limitations

This knife is technically designed for the Silhouette Curio, although Cameo can use it too if you understand Cameo's limitations. The deep cutting blade is ideal for thin foam, felt, thin magnets and some other materials less than 2mm thick. This is not a ratchet blade, the depth adjustment is a gentle twist that can help you get the exact thickness you need as it is very important that the thicker material is as accurate as possible. The potential problem I've found is that you first need to understand that the cameo doesn't have that much cutting power. The Cameo can only depress the blade with 210g of force, which is just under half a pound. You won't be cutting real chipboard or plastic with this thing, Cameo is a brush cutter, not a water cannon. The second is the turning radius. A deep blade can cleanly cut simple basic shapes out of thicker material like foam, although it can snag or miss internal corners. While you can do pretty much anything you can think of to make specific cuts, I suggest that continuous cut lines have no more than about 80 degrees of twists. You can make 90 degree cuts like squares, but the corners won't be as sharp as you would expect from paper. The third issue, which is more of a problem when using Cameo, is that you may need to trim an area of the material to fit the white rollers. I just cut the foam to fit, glue it to the cutting mat and I have no problems. In case anyone is wondering, the Creatology 12x18 foam sheets use a setting of 19-20, power 33 and speed 4. You may be able to move faster if you have smooth curves in the cuts. And the last is the price which is too high. I bought a Graphtec holder and blades for $15 from this one. Too bad the Graftek doesn't cut that deep, otherwise I'd tell Silhouette to build a bridge and jump off it.
