Perfect for any speed-solver or cube enthusiast

This set is a real bargain. I've been speed-solving 3x3 cubes for about 10 years now, and have also played around with 4x4's and pyraminx cubes. So when I saw this, I knew I had to have it. The cubes come in 5 separate little boxes, so if you're looking for a Christmas gift for kids, this would be perfect. The set contains a 3x3, 2x2, skewb, pyraminx (tetrahedron), and megaminx (dodecahedron). Before they arrived, I was afraid that these cubes might be stiff and hard to turn, like many cheap cubes I've used before. But this was not the case: all of the cubes were very smooth and fast. In fact, I accidentally dropped the skewb because I tried to hold it by adjacent corners, and the sides spun from the pressure. (Luckily there was no damage!)As far as difficulty is concerned: I was able to solve the megaminx in 30 minutes my first try. The algorithms and techniques from the 3x3 do carry over somewhat, but there are some differences that make it fun to solve (like the fact that there are 12 sides, or that the angles aren't a simple 90 degrees). It doesn't take long to become familiar with it: I took 20 minutes my second time, and I expect to keep improving. I haven't tried the skewb, but the other cubes are easier than the 3x3 and the megaminx, and just require a different mode of thinking to solve them. Note that the cubes come with instructions, in case you need them. But I consider that cheating.I had two issues with this set. First, the cubes aren't very clean. There was some sort of dry white gunk on most of the cubes, and the pyraminx had a black hair stuck under one of the stickers. If you're getting these as gifts, you may want to check inside and perhaps wipe them with a damp cloth. The second problem is that one of the corner pieces in the skewb was not screwed in far enough, and the whole thing fell apart within seconds. It's really hard to get the thing back together. You may want to pull the caps off of the corners (four of the eight corners will slide off to reveal screws underneath), and make sure that the screws look tight.

Pros
  • Puzzle Cube
Cons
  • Can cause frustration and arguments among groups solving together
