Review on CURT 117723 Trailer Receiver Infiniti by Dave Butler

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good hitch but not overloaded.

I bought two of these hitches from Curt. They had one for 95-96 and one for 97-99. My 96 had all the fairings replaced with later 97-99 models so this one fits a little better. Either would work. I have to say, however, that I'm not a big fan of towbars that attach to the spare wheel well/structural bumper. The hitch I bought for my small Honda Civic Hybrid (045m) was much stronger as it was attached to the frame. This is especially important on a 20 year old car that has spent its life in a rust belt. Mine has been clean for a year, but still. It worked very well initially and I've overloaded it many times, towing large tandem 6x12 trailers to and from my camp. I've even towed another Maxima with him on a tow bar along with my little fishing boat. While I was doing some construction, I moved a heavy dump truck to another spot on the driveway. All of this is to say that it only lasts once. One weekend I pulled a small open trailer. Wasn't very busy. I rode it over 100km in a week. At one point I walked into a hardware store without a trailer and crashed into a lamp post in one nice clip. The cement base touched my drawbar and I thought nothing of it. When I returned the khaul I was less than a mile away. I abruptly pulled out of a traffic light; Just enough that the front wheels almost started to slip. I heard a loud bang and the trailer rolled down the path beside me. I stopped quickly and was able to grab him and stop him before he did any major damage. In fact, another driver crashed into him. The entire hitch, drawbar safety chains and my bumper were still attached to the trailer. The hitch immediately threw up, at low speeds with a light trailer. It could have been a lot worse. The clutch was fine, although it was slightly bent at the top. Everything reinstalled, bumper welded again. I now have a chain holding the receiver to the rear axle in case this happens again. But I bought an old Frontier and mostly fired the Maxima from towing. It could very well be that my fishing boat sank or a heavy 6x12 trailer ran into an unsuspecting motorist. I was lucky and learned my lesson. I'm a firm believer in abusing old manual transmissions and pushing them well beyond their limits; but I'm just a lot more careful when I do it.

Pros
  • RELIABLE STRENGTH. With a durable welded steel construction, this Class 1 clutch kit is rated for 2,000 lbs. gross trailer weight and 200 lbs. Drawbar weight (limited to lowest pull component)
Cons
  • Quality
