This unit is advertised as being very noisy. I can hear from almost every room in our house which is why I bought it. A little tip: on the right side of the device there is a small slide switch that needs to be pushed down before the device will work. This switch isn't mentioned in the instructions, and my 66-year-old eyes completely missed it when trying to turn the unit on. I wrote a rather angry email to the manufacturer, to which I received a reply in no time, and the problem was solved. They even offered me a partial refund for my inconvenience - I could not in good conscience accept their generous offer for a mistake that was mine. For any of you who have ever dealt with Nordstroms, I just want to say that Win-Ware is "Kitchenware Nordstroms".
