He's doing his job. I've used it to connect a new 2018 iMac to old Thunderbolt drives and use a 2011 iMac as an external monitor. No problem. I was a little concerned at first about the adapter's weight, which would wear out the connector and USB-C connector, but it fits snugly and securely, and routing the attached cable through the hole in the iMac's stand keeps the weight down. Yes, there are (much) cheaper options, but build quality is pretty good, and there are no compatibility or reliability issues.
