The Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter lets you connect Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 devices โ€” external hard drives and Thunderbolt displays, for example โ€” to any of the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports on your MacBook Pro. As a bidirectional adapter, it can also connect new Thunderbolt 3 devices to a mac with a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port. In addition, it can be used to connect Thunderbolt-enabled displays โ€” such as the Apple Thunderbolt Display and LG Thunderbolt 2 displays โ€” to any of the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports on your MacBook Pro. However, using this adapter with an Apple Thunderbolt Display requires a power source, because the display does not provide power through the adapter. Note: This adapter does not support DisplayPort displays like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays. Terribly expensive. That works great too. But make sure you need it before you buy it!

I have an expensive Western Digital portable RAID drive (see WD 2 TB My Passport Pro Portable External Hard Drive - Thunderbolt - WDBRMP0020DBK-NESN ) that uses a Thunderbolt 2 connection From the MacBook Per inch models they had nothing but USB-C ports (with Thunderbolt 3: still confused?). So my portable RAID drive became immediately useless because there was no way to connect this existing drive to the new MacBook Pro. This situation may never pose a problem for you unless, like me, you'reโ€ฆ

Will not work with Thunderbolt 1 devices

I purchased this item to connect a Thunderbolt 1 device to a Thunderbolt 3 computer and Thunderbolt 2 devices - for example external hard drives and Thunderbolt displays to one the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports." The computer does not recognize the device even when it is connected to a Thunderbolt 3 dock. I have checked the hard drive, the Thunderbolt 1 cable, the Thunderbolt 3 port, everything works but when you add that to the mix nothing.. what a waste of $50.

A reliable solution for computers with TB2 ports

This TB3 > TB2 adapter is bidirectional, unlike most others here at Revain. This means it can be used to connect TB3 devices to an old computer with only a TB2 connector, such as B. my 2013 Macbook Pro (and also to connect TB2 devices to a computer with a TB3 connector). Works great! Solid Apple quality and the price is very reasonable compared to other similar adapters.

Does what it should. I can't ask for much more.

He's doing his job. I've used it to connect a new 2018 iMac to old Thunderbolt drives and use a 2011 iMac as an external monitor. No problem. I was a little concerned at first about the adapter's weight, which would wear out the connector and USB-C connector, but it fits snugly and securely, and routing the attached cable through the hole in the iMac's stand keeps the weight down. Yes, there are (much) cheaper options, but build quality is pretty good, and there are no compatibility orโ€ฆ

May NOT work with Macs older than 2017.

Mind you, I learned it the hard way after speaking to many Apple tech reps. The controller on this adapter is not guaranteed to support pre-2017 Macs. I have a late 2015 iMac with Thunderbolt 2 ports that I wanted to connect to an external USB-C drive (via this adapter + TB2 male to male cable). ). Everything I've researched said it should be possible, but it's not. It wasn't until my third call to Apple tech support that I found someone knowledgeable enough to tell me that this part was notโ€ฆ
