Mind you, I learned it the hard way after speaking to many Apple tech reps. The controller on this adapter is not guaranteed to support pre-2017 Macs. I have a late 2015 iMac with Thunderbolt 2 ports that I wanted to connect to an external USB-C drive (via this adapter + TB2 male to male cable). ). Everything I've researched said it should be possible, but it's not. It wasn't until my third call to Apple tech support that I found someone knowledgeable enough to tell me that this part was not compatible with my iMac. You MAY get lucky and it might work for you, but it's not guaranteed.
