Perfect Fit: Pans and Drain Plugs

badly rusted - it was just surface rust. But back then it was profitable to work with a nice new cover. However, sealing the lid is not easy. Raise the driver's side as high as possible. Drain about a liter of gear oil. I used a thin hose that went into the dipstick tube and one of those Harbor Freight oil scavenge pumps. Only then does it stop dripping and the sealing surface must be clean and dry. Apply RTV sealant to the cover. Look at the area on the gear as there is an area on the cap that SHOULD NOT be RTV applied as it will block the fluid return port. Clean all rust and aluminum deposits from the mounting screw holes to allow all screws to be easily inserted with your fingers. Put the cover on carefully and hand-tighten all screws. WAIT 1 HOUR BEFORE TIGHTENING WITH WRENCH. Tighten the screws. The manufacturer says 10 ft lbs but I think a bit tighter is required as they don't have lock washers. You know how tight they were when you took them off. They screwed them to us by about the same amount, tightening the screws from opposite sides around the entire perimeter. I waited another hour before lowering the car and refilling the fluid. Perfectly sealed. There are no more stains on the driveway.
