Review on ๐Ÿ“ˆ Mio FUSE Heart Rate and Sleep Tracker with Activity Monitoring by Lori Okuno

Great fitness watch hardware, poor fitness software

03/16/2016 Bought Mio FUSE 4 weeks ago to replace my aging Nike FuelBand SE+. In general I am satisfied with the quality of the watch and its various functions, however I am disappointed with the lack of functionality of the application and its data analysis. I've tried Basis Peak, Garmin VivoActive and others and found MioFUSE to be the best fit for my lifestyle. Watch Design: The watch is very comfortable to wear during daily activities and sleep. It's made of flexible silicone and soft rubber that doesn't irritate my skin. It flexes enough to tone up for hours during physical activity and still be comfortable. The clasp of the watch strap has not shown any signs of breakage so far and holds tight. While playing basketball, the watch detached from the end of the strap, but didn't fall off. Screen and Watch Interface: The watch's buttons are extremely sensitive and the watch will light up at the slightest touch from me or someone poking me. This is improved by Mio incorporating an accelerometer into the watch so the buttons don't activate the screen unless the watch is facing up. Heart rate monitor: I usually set the watch before a run so that the heart rate sensor reads better. In the moments when I forgot to tighten the watch, the heart rate readings were scattered all over the place and completely inaccurate. When standing still with the watch, the heart rate readings were very accurate compared to the heart rate reading with the chest strap I have. Swimming with the watch gave mixed heart rate monitor results. As MIO notes, swimming with a heart rate monitor can be inaccurate due to water temperature. I've only swum it indoors and haven't tried it in the sea or lake yet. Sleep monitoring: Sleep monitoring is activated and tells the watch that you are going to sleep. The watch and app don't seem to know the difference between sleeping and lying in bed as the app claims that from the moment I turn on the sleep monitor to the moment I turn it off slept. The app doesn't explain how it generates light and deep sleep data, nor does it tell you how often it checks your heart rate while you sleep. These features may be added later, but are currently unavailable. MioGo App: Mio provides the MioGo app to connect your watch and sync your workout and sleep sessions. I am currently using an iPhone 5s to sync to my watch. I had no trouble connecting and syncing my watch to the app. The app generally works to connect your watch and view workouts, but doesn't do much beyond that. Daily steps are simply shown as a circle filled with the appropriate amount no matter how close you are to your goal; no chart. Sleep monitoring gives a similar graph with a filled circle and again no graph, no detailed analysis, just average heart rate and sleep time. Conclusion: A great watch for anyone who would like to have a handy activity tracker with heart rate measurement, but the app and software require some work.

Pros
  • Bluetooth Smart (4.0) syncs wirelessly with popular fitness apps.
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
