Overpriced: GPS Cycling Devices

I'm an avid racing cyclist and need a device that tracks my routes and my performance. Garmin works well but is overpriced for what you get and the device has flaws; Altimeter is inaccurate, touchscreen is ok but not as good as modern smartphones - map navigation is very difficult and time consuming, route planning software is ok if your route is the same as a car but you want to ride on bike-roads, on bike paths next to some motorways or on paths that are not next to the road, you will have a hard time planning your route - this is very annoying for a device designed for cycling. Battery life was good for the first year or so - I was able to do 12 hour rides with ease, but now that it's been around three years, the device needs to be charged more frequently and probably won't make it through all of my 150-mile rides. Summer. Unfortunately, there aren't many alternatives, and smartphones that can do most of these things have very limited battery life.
