Heats up to a comfortable, not too hot, temperature. I bought it for my rabbit outside. He loves to sit on it when the temperature drops. He's standing on a wire cage and some hay around him but not on top. It doesn't get too warm and the hay around it wasn't a problem. The rabbit will sit on it or stretch out on it and take a nap. He loves it, so I love it! **Update** I use this for my bunny and he sits on it a lot! Due to the cold weather I left it on. He sat on it too much and now he has almost no hair on his feet and big blisters on his feet. I changed 5 stars to 4 because the bar still works great, I just need to make sure it's not on all the time. This may be different with chickens or other animals, but be aware that this can be a problem if the animal(s) are sitting on it most of the time. I don't know if this problem occurs if I put it on the edge of the cage instead of on the floor. Just something to be aware of.
