Review on Set of 4 Fermentation Glass Weights with Convenient Grip Handle for Wide Mouth Mason Jars by Jay Lee

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good price, works great but note - concave bottom not flat

Bought them because they looked good, which they are. However, as nobody mentioned, these weights aren't flat on the bottom, they're concave. Therefore, gas can get trapped underneath them, although the theory is that the concave surface creates a suction effect that holds the weight in place. They are well packaged and look like high quality glass. bowl of water and are easy to grab and lift. I'll get a set of more expensive flat bottom weights and compare them and then update the review. - Update - After comparing the flat and concave weights I can say that both work as intended and stay in place with no gas. at the bottom. I'm happy with it, they work well and keep both finely chopped and coarsely chopped foods under brine. I tried preparing them with finely chopped sauerkraut to make chua (daikon and carrots). The weights work well and are easy to put on and take off, except of course when the glass is almost empty, but at that point the weight is usually not necessary as there is still plenty of brine. I saw a reviewer mention that they don't work well in 1/2 gallon stone jars since the jars are wider. So I tried. I even found sauerkraut good submerged in a 1/2 gallon can. Yes, there are a few bits that slip, but they don't really seem to reach the surface, the load-suction effect seems to be holding everything down anyway. I even tried the load on Trader Joe's sauerkraut can (with a pickle in it), this can is much wider than the weight and square. It even worked great, the weight kept everything under the sole, no problem. I have raised my rating to 5 stars. Even in brine I have no problem picking up and taking off the load.

Pros
  • Expensive but decent
