Smoke! (and not for the better)

I bought this to upgrade my Dell Studio 1555 to support USB 3.0. Installation was a breeze, as was downloading the drivers (I downloaded them from the manufacturer as I have a DVD drive slot and don't like putting those minidiscs in there). Windows 7 recognized it as a USB 3.0 port in Device Manager, so I plugged in the hard drive. After about a minute I felt something caustic and saw smoke literally coming out of the card! I pulled out the card and it was hot enough to cause pain. I was a little concerned that this might be my hard drive enclosure, so I unplugged it and tried using it with a standard USB 2.0 port. I had no problems. I've also had no issues with the case using the USB 3.0 port on my home computer, nor have had any issues. I tried putting the card back into the port without connecting the drive and it immediately started smoking again. Suffice it to say this card is coming back and I will be choosing a different brand for my next Express Slot card.

Pros
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
