Review on Belkin F4U110Bt Thunderbolt Upstream Transfer and Charging for 3840X2160 by Philip Bucher

Revainrating 3 out of 5

This should not be considered a "Thunderbolt " dock - no pass-through options!

To be honest, I am very disappointed with the connectivity of this docking station. This really should be considered a USB3 dock and not a Thunderbolt dock. Why? For just one glaring omission on the part of Belkins (and I suspect they may have encouraged people to buy a more expensive model): there's no Thunderbolt port on the dock! This means you CANNOT daisy chain Thunderbolt devices to this dock, which I think is one of the important aspects of the Thunderbolt protocol (especially for laptops and similar docks). It doesn't really have any additional features compared to the USB3 dock, but it does cost more because Belkin had to throw in some flash hardware. This dock doesn't even have a USB-C port, which is a very cryptic design choice (the USB-C port on the side of this dock is for power). I have a CalDigit Thunderbolt Dock on my desk at home. I have used many years. It has another Thunderbolt port on the back, so I connected a Sonnet PCIe breakout box to a CalDigit dock with a 40Gb fiber optic NIC inserted. So, with just one cable at home, I can charge my laptop and connect it to a CalDigit docking station, which has a 34-inch 1440p screen, USB expansion ports, and a PCIe enclosure. This is one of the best aspects of Thunderbolt. Protocol when it comes to using a laptop (in my opinion) and this Belkin hub falls short in that regard. with a USB dock despite the premium price.
