Review on Nikon Reflex Nikkor Manual Digital Cameras by Scott Richardson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Poor man's lens 500mm

SLR lens is a good lens, mostly the poor man's 500mm lens. It's all manual focus and exposure. I usually use it with Nikon TC-14A to multiply Nikkor by 1.4 to 700mm. The 500mm SLR will never be as good as the AF-S 500mm f/4. But it works well when used properly. Donuts or rings as a background can be used well if the background is carefully designed. Reflex 500mm is inexpensive and lightweight. It takes a little more effort to manually focus and set the exposure. You definitely need good light on your subject to use this lens. Moonlight is also considered good light. I bought this lens before buying the Nikkor 80-400mm AF VR lens. So I no longer use this lens. But it's a fun lens for lunar shots or long isolating telephotos. The attached photo was taken with a Nikon D2X lens with an effective focal length of 35mm and a 1050mm lens at a maximum aperture of f/11 or so, probably around 1/160 second. This lens is also excellent for relatively static or stationary subjects. A viewfinder magnifier helps, and a stable tripod is almost essential. This review is for the newer N model, which has a minimum focal length of 5 feet, not the C model. A good used example should cost between $300 and $400.
