Mode Mode. Nobody in my area had Wi-Fi. Since then I've switched multiple consumer routers from Cisco, D-Link, Netgear, Asus, Buffalo, and TP-Link. Let's fast forward. my Tomato-USB Cisco E2000 eventually started to fail. Decided to use a used RT-N66U because it might work with Tomato Shibby. The first flash took a while because I didn't know if I should give it time to finish and instead I tried again after 10 minutes. I've been using the Tomato Shibby AC firmware on the 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands simultaneously for several days. Excellent and stable results. I thought everything was great until I discovered AsusWRT-Merlin on the Small Net Builder forums. I've been drinking third-party firmware, but immediately agreed with Merlin's reasoning about his firmware (Merlin is the author's nickname). Why deviate from manufacturer firmware when you don't have a good reason to use third-party firmware features? The firmware from the manufacturer will most likely be more stable. They take pains to make sure. Marlin takes Asus' open-source AsusWRT and fixes bugs, adds features, and adds basic requirements just to extend its AsusWrt Merlin. Flashing via the Tomato web interface only took a few minutes and you're done. The interface isn't as clean and fast as Tomato Shibby, but the results are great. I have the best range with the 5Ghz band. Even with IPv6 there are no errors. So even more excellent and stable results! In terms of bandwidth, I've hooked up more than a few devices in my household and saturated the air. There are Android devices including phones, tablets, Google TV, Chromecast; then some laptops, printers and voip modem. I tune the devices my wife and I use to the 5GHz band and the rest stays on 2.4. Both bands have the same SSID (so I can navigate and also control a Chromecast that doesn't support 5GHz). Insider shows a few other WiFis from my neighbors and I manually set my control channels to empty. So far the N66W is holding up quite well. It warms a little. I have it on a stand to give a little more airflow. Hope it lasts a few more years. Blue lights on the light side so I could cover them up. The on/off switch is great. Finally, feel free to buy a used device sold by Revain Prime. It's a lot cheaper. The used device I received was in brand new condition.
