I also have a Vitamix and make quite a few smoothies and soups. Most people are probably trying to decide between these two flagship mixers, so my review will compare them. The Classic Blend Tec series is comparable to the Explorian series in Vitamix. Both are entry-level models and have fewer frills than others in the line, but are more than adequate for most consumers. Any blender is a good choice, and a much better blender than most department store models. The Blend Tec has a digital control panel with push buttons, while the Vitamix has manual knobs and switches. This particular model appears to be a simplified version of their other classic models. It only has four settings: 30 seconds, +10, low heart rate, and high heart rate. Some of their other models also have a manual speed setting. The 30 second cycle mixes for 30 seconds and stops. With Plus 10 you can add 10 seconds to the programmed cycle. For Vitamix, you need to sync and shut down. The Blend Tec features two pulse buttons for pulse blending or grinding. You must use the handle to pulse the Vitamix. I find Blend Tec better for stuff like salsa where you need a good vibrant mix. The lack of true manual adjustments and speed controls is the downside of this Blend Tec. The blades and jar are the main differences between the two types of blenders. Vitamix has four sharp blades. Blend Tec has two blunt blades. The two blunt blades are actually more versatile than the Vitamix blade. You can blend everything from dry oatmeal to smoothies and even cell phones in one container (I don't recommend cell phones, but the famous videos on the web "Will it blend?" All Blend Tec blenders blended). At Vitamix, they suggest you buy a dry container to prepare things like oatmeal, since the grinding dulls the blades. It's a plus to have just one container that can do everything. Another big difference is that Blend Tec's container is square. I find it much easier to clean than the Vitamix jar and it seems to leave less food in the jar. I've noticed that most smoothie places have this type of vessel shape (and it's usually Blend Tec). Vitamix blenders come with a tamper and a rounded top so you can press down on food while blending, which is handy when adding or making something gooey. Blend Tec claims you don't have to worry about the shape of your vessel, but sometimes I wish I had one. The Blend Tec lid isn't as secure and it's easier to overfill and make a mess. The Vitamix lid allows you some air space while blending, is slightly sticky to the blender, and is less stiff. Blend Tec is just right for this. The Blend Tec has 3 hp while the similar Vitamix has only 2 hp. If you don't mix phones it probably won't make much of a difference, but Blend Tec is stronger. Blend Tec is dishwasher safe. I know friends who wash their Vitamix in the dishwasher, but the company doesn't recommend it. Even if you don't put Blend Tec in the dishwasher, its shape makes it easy to clean. Overall, I think I really prefer Blend Tec for most foods I cook based on the shape of the vessel alone. I'd like a real manual knob and speed control, and if that's important to you, some models have that. Even without this, this model would satisfy most consumer needs.
