This switch looks and works well on my boat. Very similar switches were used to control bilge pumps, navigation, anchor lights, etc. The cover is removable and its use is optional. The LED is brighter than the lighted switches (23' shelf) that came with the boat and the quality is better. Size and fit are perfect. The tab shown horizontally closest to the shifter is for connecting to a negative battery for use with an LED. The other two pins are marked with a + for the battery and another symbol for the load. These two contacts are a simple single pole double throw with the contacts open in the off position and closed in the on position. The lid turns off the switch when closed. The LED and cover, if used, serve as a good reminder that the circuit is on, so you can make sure all circuits are off when not in use. Good quality at a fair price.
