Review on 🐦 Perky-Pet 399 Advanced Upside Down Thistle Feeder by Sherri Rivera

Revainrating 2 out of 5

The bottom fell off after two weeks from the heat causing the thin plastic tube to expand!

I bought this thistle feeder in January 2015 to attract goldfinches to my garden and discourage large birds from eating thistle seeds. I originally hung this feeder on a shepherd's pole myself and waited a week but didn't see any goldfinches. My backyard is next to a wildlife park, so I knew there were a lot of goldfinches in the area. Then I hung thistle socks on the same shepherd's crook next to the bird feeder to attract these birds. The goldfinches found the thistle socks immediately. From time to time I have seen a few goldfinches perched on the thistleeater looking for holes to eat the seeds. For some reason they couldn't find the small holes. They left the feeder and began feeding thistles from socks. By the end of the second week of owning this feeder the bottom was falling off and all of the thistle seeds were falling to the bottom. We don't have squirrels in our yard, and they're not attracted to thistle seeds anyway, so squirrels have nothing to do with it. The bottom of this feeder cannot be securely attached to this feeder. Last week (February 2015) temperatures in California were in the mid 70's. Interestingly, the thin plastic tube expanded due to the heat and direct sun, causing the bottom of this feeder to fall to the ground. The socks serve their purpose and are more environmentally friendly. They don't expand at 70 degrees. I am returning this thistle feeder in the hopes that Perky-Pet will find a way to fix the design flaw at the bottom and use stronger plastic for the tubular feeder so it can handle the heat as well.
