I used this to make luggage racks for a 1989 Toyota Camry. I found the tool wide enough for the springs. I was able to grab enough of the spring to compress it. It took me a few tries to position the spring compressor correctly. I used a 1/2 stroke to compress the spring. Better eat your wheat flakes if you don't have them. It is best to clamp the entire rack assembly in a vise. I don't know how effective backup pins are in case of failure. The tool has served its purpose. I divided the tooling cost by four (four racks on the machine). The cost was less than the flat rate for working in the shop... Also, I own this tool now.
