No aquarium thermometer - confused

So, I was afraid to load the thing because the battery was dead and there was a cryptic warning in the instructions. I finally dunked it (in the sink) tonight and it stopped working. As it dries, it comes to life and slowly works again. I bought this thinking I could put it in my fish tank but apparently you can't. It's slim but NOT submersible so doesn't serve its intended purpose. The temperature outside the tank is not the same as inside. Well I tried outside. I tested it with my other thermometers. If that meant 72.1, the mercury immersion thermometer read 73, the Hannah immersion probe read 73, and the laser gun read 73.7. The accuracy is questionable. If you don't care about the degree, then it doesn't matter. But when it comes to sick fish and/or controlling bacterial growth, the level can make a difference. Then I tried it with the ambient temperature. Very different from the Hanna probe. So I don't know what to say about this thermometer. All in all it's a cool gadget and I will use it BUT it's not a very accurate aquarium temperature sensor.
