Check settings

This is a big improvement over the 12 volt bed I had. I like the increase in performance. I had a problem to solve and I'll share it here in case anyone else comes across it. After installation I noticed that my prints had horizontal lines every few layers and the pages were generally very rough. I also installed a new control board when I switched to this bed heater, so I spent a lot of time thinking that my print settings were somehow messed up before realizing what was going on. The PID controller in the Marlin firmware had to adjust the settings for this new bed. There were many temperature extremes during printing. Temperature changes cause the platform to rise and fall with temperature, affecting print quality. The settings can be changed and reloaded in the Marlin firmware, however there is a good article here https://www.3dmakerengineering.com/blogs/3d-printing/pid-tuning-marlin-firmware on how to do this with G - Code. The Marlin firmware has a very good auto-tuning function for exactly this purpose. Other types of firmware will require you to do some research on how to set the PID values. It should be noted that not all PID software may be suitable for use with a solid state relay. The default Marlin frequency for the temperature PID controller is 7.689 Hz, which is low enough to work effectively with an SSR zero crossing switching a 60 Hz load. However, not all software is the same.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Doubtful
