Review on 🌊 Waterproof Hiking GPS: Garmin eTrex Enhances Navigation by Peris Holland

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great little workhorse

After using the eTrex for a few years I switched to a more capable unit from another manufacturer (probably because it was a Gold Box offering). But I couldn't stop using the good old eTrex! The people who designed it were really great. In contrast to other devices, it can be operated entirely with one hand, which is a great advantage in practical use; smaller package; it lies evenly on any flat surface and does not slip when that surface is slightly inclined; and it has poor visual display - no maps, just user-entered waypoints. Well, that last point isn't desirable in an automatic navigation system, but for the size of the display offered in a handheld device, this is exactly what I need - no clutter. The use of a small GPS system increases with experience. Yesterday I decided to take a boat between points in Puget Sound that are separated by two miles of open water. The target was always behind me and the currents were variable in direction and speed (sometimes the speed was comparable to the speed of my rowing). Put a good old eTrex on the bench in front of me and I always have an arrow pointing my course accurately. Once I was visiting London and found that the underground was not working because of the strike. So it was difficult to get a taxi at all. One night after the theater, I decided to walk the streets paved in god knows what pattern a mile back to the hotel - no problem with the eTrex. Parked the car in a large parking lot, came back later not knowing where it was - no problem, just drive the eTrex back. The same goes for poorly marked trails in the woods - get there a little tired, come back and look for confusing trail junctions not seen at the exit - the eTrex marked path prevents wrong decisions. Keep taxi drivers honest in unfamiliar cities. My first exposure to GPS as a user was with the eTrex and I keep coming back to it. It doesn't have the sensitivity of more expensive devices - it takes longer to log in if you've moved hundreds of miles since last use, and sometimes you can't pick up a signal under dense forest canopy or on streets surrounded by high buildings. But in my experience, these shortcomings are greatly outweighed by the low cost, compact size, and excellent design. For the dollar, the funniest, most useful, useful gadget I've bought in years, and I've bought quite a few.
