I've been using Van Aken Plastalina to make jigs and molds for years. A comment from new users is that these clays are often too dry and not pliable. Plasticine and Fimo often need conditioning before use, as they harden during storage. Plasticine, in particular, can be cut into strips and placed in a warm oven (the package specifically says "melts at about 150 degrees Fahrenheit") to soften it. If it's too dry, like with polymer clay, you can add a few drops of unscented baby oil (or a ready-to-use clay softener) and knead. Voila - good working sound again.
