Good tool but incorrectly assembled from the factory

This tool is well designed or copied from someone else's good design. It's fairly easy to use, and thanks to the longer handle, it doesn't require a lot of force to compress the valve springs. I used it to rebuild a set of Chevy 350 heads. The main problem I had was the tooling not being properly assembled at the factory. I took two screenshots of the product images for the listing. One shows correct assembly, the other shows incorrect assembly preventing the tool from locking. The first (white background) shows how the tool came to me. The bolts in the upper pivot are installed from the inside out. The larger end of the nut is on the inside, which prevents the clevis from going around the shaft and jamming. Proper orientation is shown in the second picture, nuts are on the outside. This actually makes the tool a lot harder to use as without a lock you have to apply pressure to the handle to remove the spring retainers. And in my case, the mounts were stuck on the spring, so he lowered the valve into the workbench, raising the head and making it almost impossible to hold the tool, keep the head in place, and tap the spring to release the retainers with just two hands at a time. The tool is significantly less useful with this factory quality issue. And the fact that the product listing says it was assembled incorrectly leads me to believe that all the tools they ship are assembled that way. It only takes 5-10 minutes to assemble properly, but it is unacceptable, at least to me, for a tool to arrive only partially intact due to manufacturing defects.

Pros
  • PURPOSE: Easily and quickly remove the valve spring from the assembled engine for inspection or replacement.
Cons
  • Available in white only
