Got this to track an external outlet (120v) that is dead at my rented house. I've fixed circuit breakers, RCDs, etc. and even asked my landlord for an electrician who couldn't determine the source of the problem. I attached both alligator clips to the Romex coming out of the outlet and was able to use TONE to trace the wire all the way up the wall to the ceiling and then up the ceiling through the drywall to the opposite side of the house. The noise continued about halfway down the wall when I lost the signal. And so the builder outside installed a junction box that was supposed to be plugged in but accidentally got plastered over! Found a junction box opening on the outside of the wall with two perfectly serviceable wires waiting to be plugged in and plastered. I connected the wires (after turning the switch off of course), installed the outlet and the outer outlet cover and voila! I had electricity on both sides of the house and my previous outlet worked without a plug. Definitely a cheaper item for easy routing (my signal went very weak through about 2 inches of plywood and plaster) and checking continuity. Don't expect it to be a construction site. great, but for the occasional homeowner's job it will do the job of tracing electrical networks or phones/ethernet.
