My dog did what he wanted, on or off a leash. Running and barking at people, breaking leashes, running across the street, chasing cats and other dogs. Not anymore, use it properly and your pet will really listen to you and learn to think before you act. Now I can safely walk to an elementary school near my home without fear that he will aggressively bark and growl at a child or teacher because now all I have to do is vibrate and shock him when he starts walking towards them him if he starts showing aggressive behavior and he stops IMMEDIATELY. He is a 65 pound Goldendoodle, very stubborn and very strong. I think he was abused as a puppy because he has an innate fear of strangers. A shock at 11 is good for getting his attention when he's doing something very bad, at 12 or 13 when he's in danger, when he's moving on, or something very enticing to him. That's what I've found, works without hurting him or making him whimper. Our relationship has actually improved after this collar, I can walk him more and the rest of the time he is calmer as a result.
