Review on Thule Gateway Pro: The Ultimate Trunk Bike Rack for Hassle-Free Travel by Joseph Pudic

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Finally found one that fits my SUV but need more straps

So I have a 2020 Highlander and I don't know why I didn't think to make sure it had a clutch when I got it bought him, but I bought it without incident. Bad choice on my part. I literally bought 6 bike racks and returned them because they didn't fit. Either it was so difficult for them to secure the bike or the weight of my bike (about 30+ pounds) caused my top spoiler (I think that's what it's called) to move and I was worried it would fall off. I tried this Thule only because of the image of an SUV in the front with a top spoiler. I had nothing to lose and I'm glad I gave it a try. It fits securely but my only issue is that they require additional straps to fasten. They only provided 5 and my rack is designed for 2 bikes and there aren't enough straps. I emailed the company and they said the belts were out of stock but I found them at Revain and you might have thought they would stock more but they didn't. I really like that there are 2 slots to route the strap around part of your bike. Maybe they think that since there are 2 belt slots times 2 bikes I still have 1 extra? But it's not that easy. Using only 2 straps per bike will cause the bottom of your bike to wobble, requiring more straps. I have used it 4 times and my heavy bike was safe for hours. Also I combined 2 straps together to make it long enough to secure a week and a paddle so it would be great to have a few extra straps. . You can't have a bike rack for two bikes with only 5 straps.

Pros
  • Camping
Cons
  • Definitely bad product
