Review on ๐Ÿ“ถ Cisco-Linksys WRT600N Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Storage Link - Ultra RangePlus by James Stjames

Easy Setup - Very Disappointing Wireless Performance

I bought this because I was giving my daughter a D-Link DIR 655 that I had (which worked very well). Since I needed a new device, I decided on the WRT600N. Everything started very well. Installation was easy and intuitive. The network is set up and you'll be up and running in minutes, or so you thought. My wife's computer is connected to the router via 1GB Ethernet, and of course the connection is very fast. I have a ReadyNAS NAS that is also connected to the router with a 1GB Ethernet connection. This is our central storage where we store our files (movies, music, documents, emails, etc.). This connection is also very fast. Working on my wife's computer is quick and easy (I have a Qwest 7 megabit ADSL internet connection). A wireless network is a whole different story. Many devices are connected to my wireless network - PS3, Squeezebox, my computer, my laptop and my wife's laptop. I configured it with WAP2 security. There are no walls between these devices as we have a large open space between the living room and the office. My computer is 10 feet from the router, PS3 and Sqeezebox are 20 feet away. As it turns out, the WRT600N router sucks at supporting media streaming over its wireless network, period. Performance is intermittent, inconsistent, and degrades over time to the point where I have to periodically restart the router. This is inferior to the original Linksys router I had before I switched to D-Link. It is very bad. Absolutely no comparison to DIR 655. Guess what I'm doing? My experiment is over and I get another D-Link DIR 655 device. DIR 655 works much better (according to all the professional reviews I read online) and has none of the side effects described above.
