I don't know what mild steel was used in this cookware, but aluminum cookware is more durable. I've tried using a can opener but it just doesn't work, it was so hard to move unlike my last one that I foolishly threw it away after getting this set. When I opened the fourth can, the metal parts just slipped out of the plastic sleeve, as if they weren't actually there but only weakly glued. I put it back in, but the metal was so soft it only took a few tries to open the tin again before it clicked like twine. Seriously what kind of metal is used for them. It's softer than aluminum and more brittle, the worst of both worlds when it comes to alloys. I've seen all kinds of "Chinese" metals, but this one wins the award because it's the most useless. I'm pretty sure thicker plastic would have been more durable, certainly wouldn't have fallen apart at the junction of the plastic and metal and wouldn't have broken as easily.
