Review on Chrome Pulltap's Classic Corkscrew by Jake Powell

Great corkscrew but make sure you get a real one

This is a great corkscrew but make sure you get a real pulltap corkscrew. It will cost you at least $30 and is worth every penny and then some. There is another fake that is sold in China for around $12 and although at first glance it looks very similar to the real thing, it cannot be replaced. If you look at the photo below you can see them side by side and it shows a BIG difference. First and most obvious is that the original is made of machined metal, while the fake is made of finely stamped steel. The real one is marked "Original" and Pulltex on the lever, but the other one isn't. The real deal has an all-metal handle, not plastic-filled sheet metal. The real one has a shapely, teflon-coated worm, the other doesn't. Perhaps most importantly for durability, the real one has much heavier swaged pins for the worm and lever assemblies, and they look like the ones on my much more expensive handcrafted French opener that has withstood MANY bottles. All in all, the Original Pulltaps are a great opener at a good price. Just make sure you don't go cheap and buy one that falls apart after a few bottles. The cheap ones I've bought go in the picnic fridge or in the kitchen at work where they'll open a few bottles, fine, but I'm not too concerned if they disappear.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for seniors
